Amorsolo (1892-1972)

Written by Alfredo Roces, this book is the first fully illustrated monograph on a Filipino artist, the first Philippine National Artist, Fernando Amorsolo. Placed in context with the turbulent period in which he lived, from the founding of the Katipunan and the end of WWII, until his death in 1972, it tells the story of the rise and decline of a painter inextricably tied up with the history of Philippine painting. Highly acclaimed for his portraits, landscapes and genre scenes, Amorsolo pursued classical realism to "a point that culminated in controversies with the rise of modern art in the Philippines.
