Traditional Japanese architecture had a major influence on 20th-century modernist architecture, and contemporary Japanese architects have won the Pritzker Prize, known as the "Nobel Prize of architecture," with eight recipients, the most in the world, tying Japan with its home country, the United States. But how much do Japanese people really know about the appeal of Japanese architecture? Let's take this opportunity to review some of Japan's finest architecture. Our guide is contemporary artist Hiroshi Sugimoto, who opened the Odawara Art Foundation's Enoura Observatory, an artistic architectural facility, in October 2017. This is a completely new feature on famous Japanese architecture, presented from Sugimoto's unique perspective as he studies and restores materials and construction methods from ancient to early modern times.
