For over three decades, Baguio-based Filipino photographer Tommy Hafalla has been documenting the life and rituals of the ethnolinguistic groups of the Philippine Cordillera. These are presented in his first book, “Ili”, wherein the images operate not only on a visual level but also in other ways of telling history. Translated literally as 'home village', 'Ili' is a word widely used to refer to one's place of origin. In the Philippine's long struggle for cultural identity, Hafalla's photographs document the indigenous responding to modernity and how tradition is alive, creative, adapting, and constantly shifting.
