First published in 1983, Intramuros of Memory by Dr. Jaime Laya and Esperanza Gatbonton is an anthology of recollections of people who experienced first-hand the splendor and glory as well as the destruction and downfall of the historic Walled City of Intramuros. Founded in 1571 as the City of Manila, Intramuros became the center of the Spanish Empire in Asia and was honored by Spain’s King Philip II with the title “Insigne y Siempre Leal Ciudad” (Distinguished and Ever Loyal City). The book also includes "rare archival photographs of fortifications, government and private edifices, churches, schools, and street scenes during the glorious days of Intramuros evoke beautiful memories while the pictures of the war aftermath serve as a grim reminder of heritage gone to waste due to ideological conflicts and sheer negligence of all concerned."
