Maison Margiela, well-known for the four white stitches that secure its nameplate, was founded by Belgian designer Martin Margiela, who presented his first collection in Paris, France, in 1988. Through experiments involving deconstruction and reassembly, oversized silhouettes, and trompe-l'oeil, he destroyed the conventional forms of garment construction. Furthermore, he consistently maintained strict anonymity, refraining from any external publicity as an individual designer and running counter to the methods of existing fashion brands. Even after Martin Margiela's retirement in 2009, his attitude and spirit toward fashion remain assets that sustain the brand's legacy, serving as a source of inspiration and presenting a new direction to the next generation of designers.
