Art and Nationalism have always been bound together since Juan Luna's Spoliarium and its capture of the gold medal at the Madrid Salon in 1884, besting the creme de la creme of Spain's painters. Luna would become the toast of Europe and would make all Filipinos proud to be of the same country.
In this book, the history of the Philippines –– and its imperative towards Nationalism –– is traced through a thoughtfully gathered collection of works.
Almost 30 paintings are featured in this book, spanning the pre-Spanish period to our present-day politics.
It also focuses on the Art of Jorge Pineda, a titan from the "Golden Age of Illustration" that flourished from 1890 to 1930.
Together, the works underline the power of art, not just in re ecting love of country but also in inspiring and nurturing it.
Nationalism, as portrayed by the Art of Jorge Pineda, reminds us that, as we teach our children what they should live for, it is also important for them to know what to die for.
