Prudencio Lamarroza: His Life and Art

The author traces the sources of Lamarroza’s art, which had commenced in childhood and, because of the reflexiveness of his mind, continue to evolve. He discusses the disparate influences that have merged to become Lamarroza’s unique and recognizable idiom and draws together the social and cultural situation in which the Amburayan Queen and the Stones series were realized. In a tapestry of interwoven stories, he relates the artist’s inner personal conflicts, examines the roles played by his teachers and morale-boosters and cites his humility, tenacity, versatility, and productivity as among the virtues that enabled Lamarroza to gain top-row ranking among contemporary Filipino painters. What emerges from this book is a portrait of a painter of seemingly boundless creative energy who is constantly challenging himself to move on, “always further.”
