His draftsmanship, the fluency and ease by which his forms were stated impressed most of Tabuena's circle in the so-called Neo-realist group of the fifties. Yet only four years before, Tabuena was quite an angry young man. Angry at the war which cut-off his studies. Angry at his unskilled hands which could not readily translate his vision. Angry at the loving but unprofessional model he could afford, free. So limited were his means that a box of oilcolors given him at Christmas in 1947 touched him like something from the Magi himself. The gift did not stop him from banging his head against the wall in frustration. It did moreover, move his work beyond the dimension sketches and drawings.
